How Chiropractic Treats Sciatica

Sciatica is a symptom of trouble with the sciatic nerve, which is a large nerve that runs from the lower back down the back of each leg. The sciatic nerve controls the muscles in the back of your knee and lower leg and provides feeling to the back of your thigh, the sole of your foot, and part of your lower leg.

When you suffer from sciatica, you often have pain, numbness, weakness, or tingling in your lower back and down your leg to your calf or foot. Sciatica is usually on only one side of the body.

Chiropractic for Sciatica

Chiropractic treatment for sciatica is one of the more widely used ways of treating this pain. Chiropractic offers drug-free and non-invasive methods of treating sciatica such as TENS treatment, massage therapy, nutritional counseling, and exercises.

Ice/cold therapy

This treatment used by chiropractors uses a cold pack or ice to help reduce inflammation and control the pain from sciatica.

Adjustments

Spinal manipulations help realign the spine. A misaligned spine can cause inflammation, pain, muscle spasms, and other sciatica symptoms. Spinal manipulation, also called an adjustment, helps reduce nerve irritability and pain from sciatica symptoms.

TENS treatment

TENS is transcutaneous electrical stimulation. This chiropractic method uses a TENS unit to transmit painless electrical current to nerves to help control pain. A TENS treatment can help in relieving muscle spasms, stiffness and improve mobility and control pain.
