How a Chiropractor Can Help Asthma

When people think about chiropractors, they don’t generally associate them with treating asthma. However, in some cases, chiropractic care may help with asthma sufferers when nothing else will. This can be especially true for children or asthma sufferers that had an onset in childhood.

What Chiropractors Do

Essentially, chiropractors restore proper function to the spinal column. This returns proper function to the nervous system, since the spinal column is the housing for the nervous system. If your asthma problem is rooted in the nervous system, you may see improvement with treatment.

As with any chiropractic work, asthma help is not always immediate, and chiropractors don’t treat asthma directly. In most cases, the improvement can be seen over the course of several months. Regular visits to the chiropractor are essential to ensuring that regular improvement continues. You should also continue to take all medications prescribed by your doctor, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Evaluation

The first thing a chiropractor will do is evaluate your spine. They will check for any spinal problems and decide if chiropractic work will be beneficial in treating your asthma condition. While they cannot offer a guarantee, they can offer a probability and make some suggestions to change any habits or living conditions that may contribute to your asthma symptoms.

Asthma and the Spine

Many patients who suffer from asthma also have what is called an anterior dishing of the spine. This is located in the mid scapular region, and it is an issue that was detected back in the first century. However, it has only been recently that real attention has been placed on the direct correlation between the spine and asthma. For many patients, gradual, gentle adjustments can slowly correct this problem.

The Debate

There are many health experts that believe chiropractors should only treat back pain, but when looked at from an anatomical aspect, many problems begin within the back and the spine. Improper alignment of the spinal column, no matter where it is located, can cause serious health conditions. One of these issues just happens to be asthma. However, there are many more health related issues that can be linked to poor alignment of the spine.

Despite the controversy over whether chiropractic care should be used to help asthma, there are plenty of success stories. While these stories are not always the end result for every single patient, there are enough of them to make seeking a chiropractic evaluation worth your time.
